Do some viruses use growth hormone, prolactin and their receptors to facilitate entry into cells?

چکیده

Abstract The molecular evolution of pituitary growth hormone and prolactin in mammals shows two unusual features: episodes markedly accelerated and, some species, complex families related proteins expressed placenta resulting from multiple gene duplications. Explanations these phenomena terms physiological adaptations seem unconvincing. Here, I propose an alternative explanation, namely that evolutionary features reflect the use hormones (and their receptors) as viral receptors. Episodes rapid can then be explained due to “arms races” which changes lead reduced interaction with virus, subsequent virus counteract this. Placental paralogues could provide decoys bind viruses, protect foetus against infection. hypothesis implies extensive introduced into hormone, receptors during course mammalian interactions, not endocrine adaptations.

Receptors for somatotropin (growth hormone) and prolactin.

Pituitary somatotropin (growth hormone) and prolactin are two related protein hormones produced by the pituitary gland. Both contain single polypeptide chains of 190-200 amino acid residues (Wallis, 1978). In mammals, prolactin acts primarily on the mammary glands, promoting mammary growth and lactation; in many species it also has direct effects on the gonads and possibly other organs (Horrobi...

Growth-hormone and prolactin excess.

The treatment of acromegaly and hyperprolactinaemia has been improved by the availability of effective and well-tolerated slow-release somatostatin analogues and dopamine agonists with long-lasting activity, such as cabergoline. The use of these drugs has extended the possibility of treatment to patients who would have responded poorly to the previously available compounds, such as octreotide o...

Actin- and myosin-driven movement of viruses along filopodia precedes their entry into cells

Viruses have often been observed in association with the dense microvilli of polarized epithelia as well as the filopodia of nonpolarized cells, yet whether interactions with these structures contribute to infection has remained unknown. Here we show that virus binding to filopodia induces a rapid and highly ordered lateral movement, "surfing" toward the cell body before cell entry. Virus cell ...

Nonprofessional Phagocytosis Can Facilitate Herpesvirus Entry into Ocular Cells

Phagocytosis is a major mechanism by which the mediators of innate immunity thwart microbial infections. Here we demonstrate that human herpesviruses may have evolved a common mechanism to exploit a phagocytosis-like entrapment to gain entry into ocular cells. While herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) causes corneal keratitis, cytomegalovirus (CMV) is associated with retinitis in immunocompromised i...

Vaccines that facilitate antigen entry into dendritic cells.

Although vaccines have been highly successful in preventing and treating many infectious diseases (including smallpox, polio and diphtheria) diseases prevalent in the developing world such as malaria and HIV, that suppress the host immune system, require new, multiple strategies that will be defined by our growing understanding of specific immune activation. The definition of adjuvants, previou...
